A Haven For Care

I sat in the stillness swallowing the void left behind by my father’s death. Year after year, I had trudged through Dementia and Alzheimer’s eating my family whole. I juggled taking care of him – being present as much as I could – while giving my career the boost it needed – all this without any reliable support whatsoever.

And it took this harrowing chapter in my life to realise something shocking – organisations around the world didn’t provide support for family care, especially elderly care.

But my story isn’t an exception. Ever since then, every third person I’ve come across has faced this dilemma at some point – or fear that they eventually will.

So, in honour of my Dad and Mom, Villa Adriano Toldo took flight – a vision for tomorrow’s workspaces that understand the importance of elderly and child care, and integrate them into efficient workflow models.

Germany Today

Debilitating Dementia

In 2021, the international analytics firm Gallup did a study. 1 in 5 German citizens were found to be over 65, and the ones suffering from Dementia shoot higher every day. Today, it’s 1.6 Million and growing. But most aren’t cared for in a socially-nurturing environment.

Unpaid Care Work and Employee Disengagement

According to the report, 65% of all caregivers who are employed are unable to cope with the teeming stress while providing for their families’ care. This results in them being disengaged at work, and soon job dissatisfaction. On the flip side, companies having engaged and dynamic employees outperform their peers by 147% in earnings per share.

Women Employees Battling Stress

In most cases, women end up in unpaid caregiving work. Because of the crippling exhaustion, many end up leaving their jobs or switch to a part-time one with lesser pay. In 2021, female part-time workers rose to over a million. This drop-off in the workplace, not only impacts an individual's earnings, but the company's pipeline when advancing diverse talent.

Managerial Challenges

Team managers across companies have at least a 70% impact on employee engagement. And higher levels of engagement subsequently translate to higher-performing workgroups. Hence, companies that consider generational preferences, diverse or homogeneous, are building more agile and durable strategies every single day.

Talent Acquisition

The competition for acquiring talent has completely transformed. Employers compete with the holistic package of work experiences on offer – and well-being is a top hook among other benefits. Additionally, the pool of talent seeks flexibility, community, and an inclusive culture to accept a full-time job offer.

Retaining Skilled Talent

Employees are less likely to move shops if it means shifting their familycare from an environment that they fully love and trust. And the onus lies on managers to strategise creatively and support their talent in the best way possible, building work models and infrastructure to aid family care.

With concrete links found between employee engagement and key performance measures, it has been validated that investing in a family-conscious personnel policy pays off. And, it’s only a matter of time what intergenerational cure can do to the economical fabric of companies as well as nations.
